Accra: The family of the late Apostle Emeritus Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo has rejected claims that his son, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo, is the legitimate successor of the Kristo Asafo Mission. The family's reaction comes after Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I was installed as the new leader of the church by the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, the announcement of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I's installation was made via the mission's official Facebook page on Sunday, June 21, 2026, accompanied by a congratulatory message and a video marking his assumption of office. However, the Kwadwo Safo family issued a statement on Monday, June 22, 2026, clarifying that although Apostle Kwadwo Safo had appointed Israel Safo as his successor in 2017, that mandate was later revoked.
The family claims that several businesses within the Kristo Asafo group faced significant setbacks under Israel Safo's leadership, with some collapsing and others nearing collapse. They also allege that Israel Safo altered some of the church's core principles and increasingly exercised authority against the founder's directives.
In response to these developments, Apostle Kwadwo Safo reportedly revoked his son's mandate in 2024 and removed related provisions from the church's governing framework. The statement further revealed that the late founder appointed former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, as Head of the Kwadwo Safo Family and established a new succession plan for the Kristo Asafo Mission.
The revised framework excluded Mr. Israel Safo from the leadership position, and the family emphasized that it does not recognize any leadership claims by him that contradict the late Apostle's directives. The family dissociated itself from any claims by Israel Safo acting on behalf of the Kwadwo Safo Family without their authority.
Moreover, the family cautioned the public against engaging in transactions or dealings with Israel Safo that claim to represent the Kristo Asafo Mission or the Kwadwo Safo Family's interests. They reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the late Apostle's legacy and assets and indicated their intent to pursue legal actions to protect them.
