Atwima nwabiagya south: The Nkawie Circuit Court has remanded a 48-year-old factory worker, Kingsley Yeboah, into police custody for allegedly defrauding his colleague, Esther Owusu, under false pretences. Yeboah, who pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and defrauding by false pretences, is scheduled to reappear before the court on May 20, 2026.
According to Ghana News Agency, the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Frank Acheampong, informed the court presided over by Mr Robert Addo that both the complainant and the accused were employees of New Okaff Agro-Chemical Company in Nkawie. Owusu resides in Akrofrom, while Yeboah lives in Abuakwa. The incident began in January when Owusu expressed her desire to travel abroad, prompting Yeboah to introduce her to Kofi Sarpong, whom he claimed was his brother and a medical practitioner in the United Kingdom.
The court was told that Yeboah used a UK phone number to contact Sarpong, who is currently at large, to convince Owusu of the legitimacy of the travel arrangements. They agreed on a fee of GHS150,000 for the necessary travel documents. Owusu initially paid GHS70,000 to Yeboah, after which Sarpong sent her fraudulent visa documents and demanded an additional GHS12,000, which she also paid.
Owusu grew suspicious when she continued to receive excuses and assurances from Sarpong. She verified the authenticity of the documents at the United Kingdom Embassy in Ghana and discovered they were fake. Consequently, she reported the matter to the Nkawie Police.
The court heard that on April 14, 2026, Yeboah attempted to facilitate a meeting between Owusu and Sarpong at a hotel in Atwima Agogo for an additional payment of GHS25,000 for a plane ticket. Owusu, however, informed the police, who intervened at the hotel. Sarpong managed to escape, but Yeboah was apprehended.
ASP Acheampong revealed that Yeboah admitted to receiving GHS70,000 from Owusu and had refunded GHS24,000. Following the investigations, he was formally charged and brought before the court.
