Accra: Did you know that number plates with green and red backgrounds have specific significance and are issued to a designated group of people? The yellow plate given by the Drivers Vehicle and License Authority (DVLA) is also targeted at particular persons.
According to Ghana Web, the types of number plates in Ghana and the category of persons allowed to use them have been clearly outlined. Commercial vehicle drivers who want their cars registered receive a yellow number plate. This form of identification is seen on taxis, trotros, and buses.
All green number plates are designated for government vehicles. These plates help security personnel identify government officials and sometimes provide them with special treatment when necessary. The CD plate, standing for Corps Diplomatic, is primarily used by foreign diplomats such as ambassadors and members of international organizations.
For car owners who are yet to register their cars, the DV plate, which means Defective Vehicle, is issued. DV plates are for temporary usage, valid for twelve calendar months, and may be used on different vehicles at different times. The DV plate comes with a logbook that should include entries regarding the movement of the vehicle and particulars of the driver, which must be carried at all times.
Number plates with a black or white background are used by private individuals. Privately owned institutions such as banks and schools also utilize this type of number plate. Meanwhile, the DVLA has announced new vehicle number plates, noting that the updated plates will no longer display the year of registration. Instead, the plates will be redesigned to emphasize the region of registration, accompanied by a unique four-digit number and a zonal code. The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, explained that this new approach is intended to modernize the system and curb the misuse of temporary plates.
