Kumasi: Professor Yarhands Dissou Arthur, the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Mathematics Education at the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED), has raised concerns about what he terms 'excessive hunger' affecting students in tertiary institutions. He expressed that hunger, alongside academic challenges, is hindering students' ability to learn effectively and perform well in examinations.
According to Ghana Web, Professor Arthur highlighted the issue by stating, "The reality on our campuses is that many students go to class hungry. This affects their learning, health, and overall wellbeing. Government must take decisive action to curb student hunger." He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, suggesting that many students are struggling to afford even one decent meal a day. He stressed that addressing this issue should become a national policy to ensure students' success and wellbeing.
During a food donation exercise organized by the TEIN USTED Chapter, Prof. Arthur proposed the establishment of a Campus Food Bank system. He mentioned his intention to present a proposal to the Vice Chancellor to pilot this initiative on campus. "If it works here, we can use it as a model for other public universities to curb student hunger," he told reporter Kwabena Danso-Dapaah.
The donation event provided TEIN members with essential items, including 5kg bags of rice, cooking oil, milk, Lala Cake, and other necessities. Prof. Arthur, who serves as the patron of TEIN USTED, expressed gratitude for the support, noting its significance amid the rising cost of living, which has made such assistance even more crucial for students.
