Accra: Officials from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have taken Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), into custody following her extradition from the United States. She arrived at Accra International Airport on June 9, 2026, aboard an American flight.
According to Ghana Web, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced in a Facebook post that Sedina Attionu is currently being processed by the security agencies to begin serving her 10-year prison sentence. The sentence was handed down by the Accra High Court after she was convicted in absentia.
Kwakye Ofosu noted that the necessary arrangements are being made to ensure that Sedina Attionu begins her sentence in line with the court's ruling. "Officials of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have taken her into custody and are making the necessary preparations for her to begin her sentence," he stated.
The extradition process began after United States authorities informed the Government of Ghana of her surrender in January 2026. This followed the submission of an extradition request by Ghanaian authorities in July 2024. The High Court had convicted and sentenced Sedina Attionu in absentia in April 2024 for causing financial loss to the state and stealing, resulting in nearly GHS90 million in losses during her time as MASLOC boss from 2013 to 2016.
Kwakye Ofosu further revealed that discussions are ongoing between Ghana and US authorities concerning other pending extradition requests. The Attorney-General of Ghana is expected to meet with counterparts at the United States Department of Justice to discuss these matters bilaterally.
