Accra: A violent confrontation has erupted between the Ewe community of Nyekornakpoe and Zabarma people, both fishing communities at Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region over fishing, leaving some people with cutlass wounds.
According to Ghana News Agency, the dispute stems from the Zabarma youth's use of hooks for fishing on the lake, which was allegedly destroying the nets of the Ewe side and posing safety risks for swimmers. Pastor Mathew Milenyakpor, a resident in the community, expressed concerns about the hazardous fishing practices of the Zabarma people, which have led to several fishermen suffering injuries.
Attempts to engage the Zabarma people in dialogue escalated into a misunderstanding between both parties, resulting in clashes with many injuries recorded. Mr. Mohammed Hassan, the Zabarma community spokesman, accused the Ewe community of consistently attacking their fishing operations on the lake. He alleged that an amount of GHS18,000 was forcefully taken during the misunderstanding, triggering the clash.
The Assembly member of the Electoral Area, Mr. Anthony Zodzenu, confirmed the incident, stating that he has met leaders of both parties to restore calm. Six victims who were injured have reported to the police station and are receiving treatment at the Tokuroano Health Centre.
Mr. Zodzenu noted that the Zabarma people had obtained authorisation documents from the Biakoye District to carry out their fishing activities. However, the issue arose because they were operating in Krachi East Municipality despite having a permit from Biakoye. He suggested that the Zabarma people should have operated within the Biakoye District jurisdiction, as that was where they had been given permission to fish.
