Accra: Former Subin MP and NPP General Secretary aspirant, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has openly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its recent failures, attributing them to ineffective leadership from younger figures within the party. In an interview snippet shared by Citi FM on X, Boakye Antwi expressed his concerns over the party's inability to rise to the occasion during a critical election period.
According to Ghana Web, Eugene Boakye Antwi highlighted that the party had trusted the youth with leadership roles, but they failed to steer the party successfully. He noted that the party's internal direction faltered, and it struggled to effectively communicate its achievements to voters, especially the youth. This failure proved decisive in an election marred by significant issues like LGBTQ+ rights, illegal mining, and economic hardships exacerbated by global tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine War.
Boakye Antwi compared the current situation to the early years under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, where impactful interventions like the Free SHS programme were implemented. He argued that these achievements were poorly communicated to the electorate, leading to a perception of corruption and inefficiency within the party. 'What didn't Akufo-Addo do? What hasn't Akufo-Addo done for this country?' he questioned, lamenting the communication failures that overshadowed the administration's successes.
He further pointed out a reversal in political narratives, stating that accusations once aimed at their main rival, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), are now being directed at the NPP. 'It's like we have traded places,' Boakye Antwi remarked, indicating a shift in public perception.
Eugene Boakye Antwi also criticized the lack of public discourse on major policy and economic issues, particularly the country's engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He underscored the severity of the party's electoral defeat, losing by over two million votes, as a critical wake-up call for the NPP.
Despite his criticisms, Boakye Antwi expressed his belief in the party's foundational values, emphasizing the importance of aligning these ideals with effective communication and decisive leadership to regain public trust.
