Accra: Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Africa World Airlines, the Ghana-based carrier, have entered into a strategic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Accra. This agreement, designed to enhance connectivity and cooperation, focuses on codeshare and interline operations, cargo collaboration, and frequent flyer programs.
According to Ghana News Agency, the MoU provides a framework for integrating the networks of the two airlines. Once executed, this partnership will facilitate Etihad passengers in traveling seamlessly beyond Accra to various destinations within AWA's network across Ghana and West Africa. Conversely, AWA passengers will gain access to Abu Dhabi and extended connections to Etihad's 118 global destinations.
The partnership is set to extend beyond passenger services, incorporating cargo operations that will enable exporters from Ghana and West Africa to leverage Etihad Cargo's global network. Additionally, the collaboration will encompass loyalty programs, offering members of both airlines increased opportunities to earn and redeem rewards.
The collaboration is timely, aligning with the strengthening trade, investment, and government relations between Ghana and the UAE, marked by an increase in travel between Accra and the UAE. The MoU became effective on July 24, 2026, with various cooperation areas to be rolled out in phases. Etihad Airways also announced plans for a direct Abu Dhabi-Accra service, set to begin on March 24, 2027, with combined journeys available for sale once the interline agreement is active.
Mr. Arik De, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer of Etihad Airways, highlighted Ghana's position as one of West Africa's most dynamic aviation markets and described Africa World Airlines as an ideal partner. He emphasized that the partnership would connect Ghanaian travelers and businesses to Abu Dhabi and Etihad's extensive global network.
Mr. Sohail Mahmood, Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, expressed pride in connecting Ghana and West Africa for over a decade. He noted that the partnership with Etihad Airways would offer customers seamless access to Abu Dhabi and the global network of destinations, enhancing opportunities for Ghanaian travelers and international businesses alike.
The statement mentioned that details regarding the interline, codeshare, cargo, and loyalty arrangements would be disclosed as each phase of the partnership is implemented.
