EPA Director Urges Precautionary Measures Amid Severe Harmattan Season

Techiman: Mr Emmanuel Lignule, the Bono East Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), has issued a warning about the severe harmattan season, urging Ghanaians to adopt precautionary measures to mitigate adverse health risks.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Lignule emphasized the importance of the EPA's efforts in monitoring air quality. The Authority has installed Air Quality Monitoring Stations in major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale to measure pollutants and provide daily Air Quality Index reports. In an interview, Mr Lignule highlighted the EPA's critical role in mitigating the effects of the dry season and advised the public, particularly vulnerable groups, to wear nose masks to prevent dust inhalation.

He further cautioned individuals with underlying health conditions to limit outdoor activities, noting that pollution levels could trigger allergic reactions and exacerbate existing conditions. The EPA is actively working to address environmental issues such as air pollution and has implemented measures to reduce the impact of the harmattan.

Mr Lignule stated, "The EPA is taking steps to address the impact of the harmattan through frequent public education, sensitizing the public on health hazards associated with the season to enable them to protect themselves." He warned that the season brings a dry and dusty atmosphere that poses health risks like skin dryness, respiratory challenges, and eye irritation. To combat these effects, the Authority has launched a National Adaptation Plan aimed at strengthening the nation's climate resilience. The plan seeks to reduce vulnerability to climate change, improve air quality, manage waste, and promote sustainable practices.

In addition, Dr Ernest Ameyaw, the Medical Director at the Techiman Holy Family Hospital, advised the public to also wear nose masks, moisturize their skin, and stay hydrated. He emphasized the importance of drinking water frequently and eating more fruits, urging individuals with asthmatic conditions to avoid dusty environments to maintain their health.
