Environmental Health Students of USTED Tackle Waste at Asante Mampong Magazine

Kumasi: The Environmental Health and Sanitation Education (EHSE) students from the Asante Mampong Campus of the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED) joined forces with the Mampong Municipal Assembly and local artisans to conduct a comprehensive clean-up of the Fitam site, commonly referred to as the Asante Mampong Magazine.

According to Ghana News Agency, this community clean-up initiative was in line with USTED's focus on community engagement and service learning. It offered the students a chance to apply environmental and sanitation health concepts practically while promoting civic responsibility and professional skill development. During the exercise, the students educated the artisans about environmental sanitation and occupational health risks, aimed at reducing waste accumulation, and devised a sustainable sanitation action plan to ensure ongoing cleanliness at the site.

Mr. Patrick Nii Lante Lamptey, the Lecturer-in-Charge of the Humans and Environment Course at USTED, led the students in this initiative. He emphasized that his course is structured to introduce level 100 students to the relationship between human activities and environmental health outcomes. The clean-up exercise provided valuable experiential learning, reinforcing classroom knowledge and addressing real-world environmental challenges faced by the community.

Mr. Lamptey expressed gratitude to the Mampong Municipal Assembly and USTED's management for supplying the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and first-aid kits, which were crucial for the success of the exercise.
