Accra: Ensign Global University, in partnership with Engage Now Africa, has commemorated International Albinism Awareness Day 2026 through a stakeholder engagement program. The initiative aimed to enhance inclusion, raise awareness, and promote improved healthcare outcomes for individuals living with albinism in Ghana.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event assembled individuals with albinism, health experts, policymakers, researchers, educators, students, civil society groups, and media practitioners. The objective was to advocate for inclusion and drive impactful change. International Albinism Awareness Day seeks to encourage multi-sectoral dialogue and coordinated efforts on the rights, health requirements, and social integration of persons with albinism.
Despite increased advocacy, individuals with albinism in Ghana face significant challenges, including higher risks of skin cancer and visual impairments, while also dealing with stigma, discrimination, and limited access to quality healthcare and education. Professor Stephen Alder, President of Ensign Global University, emphasized the institution's dedication to advocating for equal opportunities for persons with albinism and enabling them to thrive without obstacles.
'Ensign Global University is committed to reducing barriers to accessing health system resources as fundamental to national development as evident in our research, collaboration, and advocacy endeavors,' Professor Alder stated.
Madam Cecelia Amankwah, Country Director of Engage Now Africa, expressed gratitude to Ensign Global University for organizing the important dialogue on International Albinism Awareness Day. She highlighted the collective determination to promote dignity, improve health outcomes, and foster greater inclusion for persons with albinism in Ghana.
Madam Amankwah noted that Engage Now Africa continues to witness both the resilience of people with albinism and the persistent barriers they face, especially in accessing adequate healthcare, protection, and social acceptance. She emphasized the urgent need for coordinated, multi-sectoral efforts that extend beyond awareness to implement tangible changes for persons with albinism.
The Country Director confirmed that Engage Now Africa would maintain collaboration with partners to translate dialogue into measurable impact. The commemoration of International Albinism Awareness Day serves as a crucial opportunity to strengthen awareness and encourage evidence-based action. This year's event focused on enhancing awareness, improving cross-sector collaboration, and promoting inclusive health and education systems for individuals with albinism in Ghana.
