Accra: The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to investigate the violent disturbance at Obuasi Senior High Technical School. The Ministry has also instructed the GES to apply appropriate disciplinary sanctions against all persons found culpable.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Dr. Clement Abass Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education, on behalf of the sector Minister, was issued in Accra. The Ministry condemned the incident, describing the acts as reprehensible and criminal. The statement emphasized that such conduct has no place within Ghana's educational institutions and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Ministry further stated that discipline remains the foundation of quality education. It assured the public of its commitment to working closely with the GES and other relevant state institutions to uphold discipline, safeguard school leaders, and students to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for teaching and learning.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 5, when some students allegedly attacked Mr. Abdulai Zakaria, the Headmaster, following a violent confrontation. The students reportedly accused the Headmaster of engaging in ritual activities on campus. Six students suspected of playing various roles in the physical attack on the Headmaster have been arrested by the police for investigation.
