Accra: The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has requested further financial support from China to complete the proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo, located in the Savanna Region. This appeal was made during discussions with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, focusing on the advancement of the project.
According to Ghana Web, the Government of Ghana had previously secured a US$30 million grant from China last year to initiate the construction of the university. However, in a statement dated September 2, 2026, the minister highlighted that this amount is not sufficient to fully establish and equip the university. The overall cost of constructing and equipping the new institution is estimated to exceed US$100 million.
"The US$30 million grant will not be sufficient to fully finance the establishment of the university," Iddrisu stated, emphasizing the need for stronger partnerships and additional funding. He urged for further collaboration to ensure the necessary infrastructure and facilities are in place to realize the project.
Haruna Iddrisu also revealed that the government plans to establish universities in regions currently lacking such institutions. This initiative aims to expand access to quality tertiary education and promote balanced national development across the country.
The Chinese Ambassador, Cong Song, expressed appreciation for Iddrisu's leadership and commitment to transforming Ghana's education sector. He highlighted the significance of Ghana-China cooperation in enhancing educational development and strengthening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both nations.
