ECG Enhances Akwatia Power Infrastructure to Address Regional Demand

Akwatia: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated the process of upgrading the Akwatia Bulk Supply Point (BSP) to bolster power supply stability in response to increasing electricity demand in the Eastern Region.

According to Ghana News Agency, the project entails replacing an overloaded 10-13 MVA power transformer with a more robust 20-26 MVA transformer. This upgrade aims to enhance electricity supply for consumers in Akwatia, Oda, Asamankese, and Kade. Mr. Emmanuel Appoe, Eastern Regional General Manager of ECG, revealed this during an interview at the project site in Akwatia. He emphasized that the upgrade was a prompt response by ECG management to an urgent request for expanding the substation's capacity to handle rising load demand.

Mr. Appoe stated, "We realized that the transformer was becoming overloaded, so we had to quickly write to management to assist us, and they responded swiftly to our request. This project will help us to serve customers better and deliver on our promise as a company in the region." He assured that once completed, the upgrade would provide homes and businesses in the beneficiary areas with improved voltage levels and a more reliable power supply.

Mr. Francis Kofi Atsyatsya, General Manager in charge of Sub-Transmission at ECG, mentioned that the Akwatia upgrade is part of a broader national initiative aimed at reinforcing power infrastructure across ECG's operational areas. He highlighted that similar upgrades have been successfully executed in Accra, Kumasi, and areas within the Volta region. Mr. Atsyatsya also noted that the installation team is expected to complete the project within seven days, ensuring improved service delivery ahead of the upcoming World Cup tournament in June.

As of the report, the ECG Sub-Transmission team had arrived at the BSP and offloaded the new transformer for installation. Key officials overseeing the delivery included Nai Operteh Omai III, Eastern Regional Engineer; Mr. Joshua Asare, Eastern Regional Revenue Protection Manager; Madam Harriet Kuwere, Akwatia District Manager; and Mr. Evans Ebo Sarpong, Supervisor at the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Centre, Eastern Region.
