Accra: Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, securing a significant opportunity to lead the party into the upcoming national election.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Bawumia captured nearly 57% of the votes from the over 200,000 NPP delegates, with his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, receiving approximately 24% of the votes. The primaries have not only shaped the future leadership of the NPP but also influenced the reputations of several key individuals and entities involved.
Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, stands as one of the primary beneficiaries of the election results. Dankwah had consistently predicted Dr Bawumia's victory prior to the election, adding another success to his record of accurate election projections. His last survey predicted Dr Bawumia would win with 57% of the vote, closely aligning with the actual results, which saw Bawumia garner 110,645 votes, equivalent to 56.48%.
Bryan Acheampong, the Abetifi MP, also emerged as a notable figure in the primaries, securing third place with 18.53% of the votes, surpassing expectations and predictions. His performance has been hailed by political analysts as a significant achievement, positioning him as a formidable figure within the party.
Among the spiritual leaders who predicted Bawumia's victory, Prophet Nigel Gaisie and Prophet Eric Boahen Uche both accurately foresaw the election outcome, further cementing their credibility. Prophet Gaisie had consistently stated that Bawumia would win, while Prophet Uche prophesied Bawumia's success during a New Year's Eve service.
In contrast, Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent contender, faced disappointment, finishing second with a reduced vote share compared to his previous attempt in 2023. Agyapong's controversial remarks about Dr Bawumia during the campaign may have impacted his standing within the party, potentially affecting his future influence.
Prophet Bernard ElBernard Nelson-Eshun, known for his past accurate predictions, also faced a setback, having predicted Agyapong's victory. Following the results, he issued an apology for his incorrect prophecy.
