Dr Jinapor Urges Bui Power Authority to Focus on Battery-Backed Energy Storage

Accra: The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has been urged to prioritise battery-backed renewable energy solutions to help meet Ghana's rising evening electricity demand. Speaking at the Authority's annual stakeholders' meeting in Accra, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, emphasized the need for expanding battery energy storage capacity, which would enable excess power generated during the day to be stored and supplied during peak evening hours.

According to Ghana Web, Dr Jinapor highlighted that battery-backed renewable energy systems offer a practical solution to some of Ghana's electricity challenges. He explained that the difference between off-peak and peak demand can rise to as much as 700 megawatts, leading to idle capacity during the day if not addressed. By improving battery-backed energy, stored power during the day could be used to supply continuous energy in the evening.

Dr Jinapor further encouraged state-owned energy sector agencies to prioritise their expenditure and invest in areas that directly benefit the sector. The Chief Executive of BPA, Kow Eduakwa Sam, acknowledged the role of increased solar generation in strengthening the Authority's position as a leader in Ghana's renewable energy sector. Despite cash flow constraints, BPA has expanded its solar business, increasing operational solar capacity by 50 megawatts.

Hydropower remains BPA's principal generation asset, contributing 97 percent of total generation for the year. Significant developments have been made in new hydro projects on the Tano, Pra, and Ankobra rivers. BPA has also continued to invest in infrastructure and digital transformation to support operations and future growth.

Board member Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku noted the Authority's performance in 2025 as a reflection of the commitment of its board, management, and staff. BPA's 2025 Annual Report revealed a strong financial performance, with a net profit of $66.2 million from power production and a net profit margin of 45.4%, surpassing its target of 20.5%.

The report also highlighted growth in BPA's renewable energy portfolio, with solar generation capacity increasing from 55 megawatts peak to 105 megawatts peak. In 2026, BPA plans to focus on proactive plant maintenance, system optimisation, and renewable energy expansion, aiming to add 100 megawatts of solar capacity, raising operational solar capacity to 205 megawatts peak.

To support Ghana's green transition agenda, BPA plans to develop 300 megawatts peak of dispatchable solar photovoltaic plants through large-scale battery energy storage systems, with project completion expected by the end of 2028.
