Accra: The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has raised concerns about Ghana's economic growth, emphasizing that improvements in macroeconomic indicators have limited significance if they do not lead to job creation for the youth.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Boako expressed his views during an appearance on NewsFile, stating that economic success should not be gauged merely by positive fiscal and macroeconomic statistics while unemployment rates remain high. He argued that the real measure of economic recovery lies in its ability to enhance the lives of ordinary Ghanaians by providing employment opportunities, increasing incomes, and expanding economic prospects.
Dr Boako warned that economic growth that does not create jobs could exacerbate inequality and undermine public confidence in economic reforms. He urged that fiscal and economic policies should be evaluated not just by headline growth figures but also by their capacity to drive private sector growth, support entrepreneurship, and create sustainable employment opportunities.
His comments come as discussions on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review are underway, with stakeholders evaluating the government's fiscal performance and how the country's improving economic indicators are impacting the lives of Ghanaians.
