Accra: Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially commissioned the newly constructed St Jude's Catholic Church in New Weija, a project he personally initiated to honor his friendship with Rev Fr Andrew Campbell. This event marks another milestone in Dr Bawumia's longstanding commitment to philanthropic and faith-based endeavors throughout the nation.
According to Ghana Web, the commissioning ceremony took place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, and was attended by Fr Andrew Campbell, the resident priest at St Jude's and head of the Weija Leprosarium. Fr Campbell expressed profound gratitude towards Dr Bawumia, highlighting his unwavering support and generosity over the years. "I am a beggar priest and I am not ashamed of it. I beg for the poor," Fr Campbell stated, emphasizing the consistent aid provided by Dr Bawumia during times of need.
Fr Campbell recounted past instances of support, including when Dr Bawumia stepped in to provide food for the aged and vulnerable at the Lepers Aid Centre after Fr Campbell was defrauded. "Bawumia always helps me. Last year when I was defrauded, he gave me food to feed the aged. God has blessed him and I thank God for his life," he shared.
The newly built church is a testament to Dr Bawumia's broader efforts in supporting Fr Campbell and the leprosy-affected individuals at Weija. As the Life Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, Dr Bawumia has been recognized for over a decade as a pivotal supporter, providing regular financial and food donations and celebrating special occasions with the leper community.
Among many acts of kindness, Dr Bawumia notably sponsored Priscilla, a young girl with severe leprosy-related deformities, for advanced medical treatment in Italy. Fr Campbell expressed that Dr Bawumia's support has been unwavering: "Dr Bawumia has never said no to us. Anytime we have called on him, even on short notice, he has responded positively. He comes here all the time to spend time with us, interact with us, and eat with us."
