Accra: Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, securing his position as the party's candidate for the 2028 general election. Dr Bawumia garnered 110,643 votes, which accounts for 56.48 percent of the total valid votes cast, surpassing his nearest competitors Kennedy Agyapong, who obtained 46,554 votes (23.8 percent), and Dr Bryan Acheampong, who received 36,303 votes (18.3 percent).
According to Ghana Web, the figures from this year's primaries reveal a broader and more pronounced support base for Dr Bawumia compared to previous years. Despite a slight dip in percentage from 2023, where he secured 61.7 percent of the votes, the margin of victory in 2026 was more substantial, reflecting a stronger endorsement from party delegates. Dr Bawumia managed to defeat his closest rival by 64,089 votes, a notable increase from the 46,214-vote margin in the 2023 primaries.
Geographical analysis indicates that Dr Bawumia exhibited overwhelming dominance across the country, winning 14 out of 16 regions. Kennedy Agyapong managed to claim victory only in the Central Region, while Dr Bryan Acheampong won the Volta Region. Dr Bawumia achieved near-total constituency sweeps in 11 regions, demonstrating a level of dominance not seen in previous primaries.
In regions with significant delegate strength, such as Ashanti and Greater Accra, Dr Bawumia's performance improved markedly. He won 45 out of 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region, losing only Bosomtwe. In the Greater Accra Region, his victories increased from 19 constituencies in 2023 to 32 in 2026, with vote margins also widening significantly.
Even in regions where his competitors were expected to perform well, Dr Bawumia exceeded expectations. In the Central Region, despite being Kennedy Agyapong's stronghold, Dr Bawumia improved his performance, winning seven constituencies. In the Eastern Region, he secured a victory over Dr Bryan Acheampong by nearly 5,000 votes.
Overall, Dr Bawumia's triumph in 232 out of 276 constituencies underscores his widespread acceptance and positions him as a unified and nationally endorsed candidate for the NPP as they head towards the 2028 elections.
