Bono east: A downpour that hit the entire Bono East Region on Sunday February 1, has caused extensive destruction to properties and personal belongings running into thousands of Ghana cedis. The worst affected communities, of the rains which accompanied incessant lightning and storm were spread across Atebubu/Amantin municipality, Sene West, and Sene East Districts, rendering scores of people homeless.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kwasi Lampo, the Bono East Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), reported during a visit to some of the affected communities that about 30 households were severely impacted, with the roofs of many classroom buildings being ripped off. He mentioned that NADMO was collaborating with various Municipal and District Assemblies to provide relief items to those affected.
Mr. Abdalah Abubakari, the Sene West District Director of NADMO, also highlighted that bushfires had become a growing concern in the area, with about seven incidents recorded, destroying acres of maize farms and cashew plantations. He emphasized the need for intensified public sensitization and the enactment and enforcement of byelaws to address the situation.
In an interview, Mr. Habib Adamu, the Assembly Member for the Willie Kofi Electoral Area in the District, appealed to philanthropists, corporate, and religious bodies to support the affected people's upkeep. He noted that many of those affected were peasant farmers who could not afford to re-roof their houses at present.
Mr. Braimah Murtala, the Sene West District Coordinating Director, stated that the assembly was doing everything possible to alleviate the affected people's plight and appealed for public support.
