Kumasi: Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has called on the government not to renew the mining lease of Gold Fields for the Tarkwa mine, citing reported xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians in South Africa. In a video shared on social media, Kwaku Manu referenced alleged attacks targeting Ghanaians in South Africa, arguing that while Ghanaians cannot retaliate by attacking South African nationals in Ghana, the country should reconsider allowing Gold Fields, a South African company, to continue its mining operations.
According to Ghana Web, Kwaku Manu stated that Ghana has now reached a point where its gold resources can be mined locally, pointing to Ibrahim Mahama's E and P as an example. He also called for other Ghanaian businessmen to be supported to participate in the mining sector. The actor emphasized the importance of Ghana taking control of its natural resources and ensuring that local companies are empowered to contribute to the industry.
Kwaku Manu's plea included a direct message to President Mahama, urging him not to renew the lease. 'President Mahama, please do not renew Gold Fields' mining lease. As Ghanaians, we cannot attack them or tell South African nationals to go back to their country. But we have now reached a point where we can also mine our gold ourselves, just as Ibrahim Mahama is already doing,' he said.
The actor also commended Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for his efforts in supporting Ghanaians abroad who face difficulties. Meanwhile, on May 27, 2026, a flight carrying nearly 300 Ghanaians repatriated from South Africa amid fears of a resurgence of xenophobic violence landed in Ghana. Further arrivals are expected in the coming days, with about 800 Ghanaians reportedly registered for repatriation.
