Accra: Amid growing criticism from Ghanaians over the destruction of water bodies by illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, and calls for President John Dramani Mahama to urgently address the issue, comedian DKB has shared his perspective. In a recent discussion on UCook with Empress Gifty, shared on X on February 23, 2026, DKB stated that President Mahama should not allow himself to be pressured over the issue.
According to Ghana Web, the illegal mining menace began under the leadership of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and therefore, Ghanaians should not mount pressure on the current president to immediately declare a state of emergency. DKB emphasized that President Mahama should tackle the galamsey issue at his own discretion, as he was not responsible for the issuance of over 200 licenses to galamsey operators or for passing laws permitting mining in forest reserves.
DKB expressed his support for President Mahama's handling of the situation, urging him not to succumb to external pressure. He stated, "JM, don't let anybody stress you. Solve the galamsey issue when you want, because you are not the one who started it. You are not the one who gave over 200 licenses to galamsey operators. You are not the one who passed the law allowing mining in forest reserves. It is evil. Nobody should put pressure on JM."
Furthermore, DKB advised that the president should declare a state of emergency concerning the galamsey issue at his own pace, adding that those advocating for immediate action should reconsider their stance. "Those saying he should declare a state of emergency should back off," he added.
