Accra: The Minority in Parliament has challenged the Bank of Ghana's (BoG) reported GHS15.6 billion operating loss for the 2025 financial year, arguing that the actual figure is significantly higher.
According to Ghana Web, during a press conference on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, rejected the BoG's figures. He argued that the true operating loss for 2025 stands at approximately GHS34.9 billion, more than double the official figure. He further stated that when proceeds from gold sales estimated at GHS9.6 billion are factored in, the total comprehensive loss could rise to about GHS44 billion.
Oppong Nkrumah accused the government and its representatives, particularly NDC party officials, of attempting to downplay the severity of the financial situation. "The government and its spin doctors, led by the NDC party officials who did that press conference, are trying to convince the people of Ghana that their loss is GHS15.6 billion. We regret to tell the people of Ghana that this is not true. The true operating loss of the Bank of Ghana for the year 2025 is GHS34.9 billion," he remarked.
The BoG's 2025 Annual Report and Financial Statements indicate that the current loss marks a rise from GHS9.48 billion recorded in 2024. This new figure extends the central bank's streak of deficits to four consecutive years, following losses of GHS60.9 billion in 2022 and GHS10.5 billion in 2023.
