Accra: The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has urged Parliament to summon the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to clarify reports regarding the use of a private jet by former President John Dramani Mahama for official travel. The jet in question is reportedly linked to Mahama's brother, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest and public expenditure.
According to Ghana Web, Shaib's call for accountability follows Ablakwa's past criticisms of former President Nana Akufo-Addo for using chartered luxury jets, which led to allegations of hypocrisy. Speaking during the Business Statement in Parliament, Shaib emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in government dealings, especially those involving the use of private assets for state functions.
Shaib, who represents the Weija constituency as a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisted that Ablakwa should address whether the private jet is owned by Ibrahim Mahama and whether its usage was cost-free to the state. He highlighted the importance of Parliament's oversight role in ensuring responsible management of the public purse.
Additionally, Shaib pointed out the government's promises to build airports in all regions of Ghana, demanding that Ablakwa provide updates on these commitments when summoned. 'As representatives of the people, it is important that we are well informed about such projects, particularly where they have implications for national development and public resources,' Shaib stated.
