Lagos: Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, known professionally as Davido, has revealed his decision to significantly downsize his entourage, attributing the change to a shift in his lifestyle, increased family responsibilities, and a desire to foster a more productive environment.
According to Ghana Web, in an interview with Vibe Magazine, Davido discussed the creative process behind his forthcoming album and explained that his current lifestyle no longer accommodates the large entourage he was known for earlier in his career. The singer emphasized that marriage and a focus on his family and career have prompted him to prefer a smaller, more focused circle.
'Now I live with the kids and my wife. I can't have 100 people in my house like before,' he remarked. Despite the reduction in numbers, Davido insists that he has not abandoned his friends. Instead, he has supported them by helping establish businesses and create income sources. 'It's not like everybody that used to be around me are not still friends and not. you know. I've set everybody up financially,' he added.
Davido encourages those close to him to develop skills and contribute to his brand rather than merely being part of his entourage. 'If you're around me, get something to do. What business do you want to do? Oh, you want to open a shop for your wife's spot? Okay. How much? You take this,' he stated. He also rewards those who bring business opportunities, giving them a percentage of the deals.
The singer shared that this approach has influenced how he records music, with fewer people involved in his latest project compared to previous ones. 'Normally, recorded 10 people in the studio. We're drinking. You know how it is, like party vibe. But with this record, because of my situation, like I can't be having 100 people at the crib,' he explained.
Davido now prioritizes working with individuals who have a direct impact on his career and creative process. 'When it's time to work, we got to get to it,' he noted. He also emphasized the importance of respect within his circle, saying he does not tolerate disrespectful behavior. 'Respect. Definitely. Like when I see somebody acting out of character, respect to people. Respect a woman. Respect in general,' he said.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Davido acknowledged that his family instilled in him the values of respect, sharing, and caring for others. 'I was brought up to take care of people as well,' he concluded. Following a successful 53-show world tour, Davido remains committed to building his legacy and evolving as an artist.
