Accra: The Diaspora African Forum (DAF) Embassy has announced the passing of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, a prominent civil rights leader and a founding board member of the Embassy.
According to Ghana News Agency, Reverend Jackson passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at about 0200 hours. Dr. Erieka Bennett, Ambassador of the DAF Embassy, expressed condolences to the family and highlighted Reverend Jackson's significant contributions as a global symbol of courage, resilience, and commitment to justice.
The statement from the Embassy emphasized Reverend Jackson's dedication to civil rights, human dignity, and equality. His life's work significantly influenced the global struggle for social justice. As a founding board member of the DAF Embassy, he played a crucial role in empowering marginalized communities and uniting people of African descent worldwide.
His leadership and vision were pivotal in initiatives such as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, which focused on economic justice, political empowerment, and social change. The statement also recalled his historic bid for the presidency of the United States, recognizing it as a significant moment in global Black political history.
The Embassy announced that a book of condolence would be available for signing from Thursday, February 19 to February 26, 2026, at the DAF Embassy located at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre. Ms. Claudette Perry, another founding member of the DAF Embassy and a current executive of Black Press USA, will commence the signing.
Additionally, Reverend Jackson will be honored on the historic Sankofa Wall at the Diaspora Embassy. The DAF Embassy reaffirmed its status as the first and only diplomatic mission dedicated to serving the African Diaspora globally.
