Savelugu: A borehole has been constructed for Depali T. I Ahmadiyya Basic School in the Savelugu Municipality to improve learners' access to safe and reliable water for their hygiene needs. The facility, located on the school's premises, will also serve the water needs of members of the Depali community.
According to Ghana News Agency, the borehole was constructed by Catholic Relief Services (CRS), an international NGO, with funding support from Water Access Now (WAN). Dr. Abena Amedormey, Country Representative of CRS, highlighted during the inauguration of the facility that "It represents more than a source of water. It is an investment in education, health, and the future of every child, who learns in this school."
Dr. Amedormey further elaborated, stating, "Today, we celebrate not only the completion of a borehole but also the realization of hope, dignity, health and opportunity for the pupils, teachers and community members, who will benefit from this facility." She emphasized that the construction of the facility formed part of the partners' effort to improve access to safe and reliable water for vulnerable communities in the country.
Since 2006, CRS and WAN have collaborated to enhance access to safe and sustainable water for underserved communities in the Northern, Oti, and parts of the Bono Regions. Dr. Amedormey mentioned that "Through WAN's generous support, more than USD 3 million has been invested in water access initiatives resulting in the construction of over 300 water facilities."
These facilities have significantly improved the lives of thousands by reducing the burden of water collection, preventing waterborne diseases, supporting livelihoods, and creating healthier learning environments for children. Dr. Amedormey expressed gratitude to WAN for its continued confidence in CRS and its commitment to the country. She also acknowledged the support of the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, school management, teachers, parents, and community members in realizing the project.
Addressing the learners, Dr. Amedormey stated, "This facility belongs to you. Use it responsibly, practice good hygiene, and help protect it for future generations of students." She assured the beneficiaries that "As CRS continues to implement the Improving Water Access in Northern Ghana project, we remain committed to working with partners to expand access to safe water and strengthen the resilience of communities."
Madam Nicole Miller, Board Member of WAN, expressed gratitude to all the community partners for their support for the project. She expressed satisfaction that the community had gained access to safe and reliable water and hoped that the facility would serve current and future generations.
Mr. Abdulai Firdause, Headmaster of Depali T. I Ahmadiyya Basic School, thanked CRS and WAN for addressing a major need of the school and noted that it would improve teaching and learning.
