Accra: The Convention People's Party (CPP) has saluted the workers of Ghana for their invaluable contribution to national development, as the country commemorates May Day. The party emphasized the pivotal role played by workers in Ghana's struggle for independence, highlighting that political independence was achieved largely due to the support of railway workers, ex-servicemen, market women, teachers, and other organized labor unions.
According to Ghana News Agency, the CPP reflected on the historical impact of workers who took to the streets to amplify the party's demand for "Self Government Now" through demonstrations and public gatherings. In a statement signed by the National Communications Director of the Party, Mr. Osei Kofi Acquah, the CPP noted that Ghana's independence was not fully realized. The party explained that the quest for economic independence was interrupted by the 1966 coup d'©tat, leading to stagnation, poor planning, and inadequate management of development in the country.
The statement further highlighted that despite 69 years since gaining political independence in 1957 and embarking on economic independence from 1960, many state-established factories remain closed. The party pointed out that several state-owned enterprises had been sold, with ongoing attempts to dispose of the remaining ones. Moreover, it observed that state houses and public properties, including natural resources, continue to be distributed among cronies, family members, and friends of those in authority.
The CPP expressed its intention to rekindle its historic union with the workers of Ghana to complete the journey towards achieving economic independence. It encouraged workers to expand their membership, remain patriotic, and be politically active while maintaining a non-partisan stance. Furthermore, the party extended an invitation to workers to join the CPP Central Committee, as they did during the struggle for political independence in the 1940s and 1950s.
The CPP commended workers across all sectors of the economy for their sacrifices, dedication, and commitment to national progress.
