Accra: The Concerned Drivers Association has announced plans to increase transport fares by 30% following the recent rise in fuel prices. National Public Relations Officer of the association, David Agboado, said drivers could no longer absorb the impact of rising fuel costs and would have to adjust fares to reflect current market conditions.
According to Ghana Web, Agboado maintained the association's earlier proposal for a 30% fare increase despite the government's previous decision to absorb GHS2 of the fuel price. He explained that while the government's intervention was helpful at the time, the current situation has made it difficult for drivers to continue charging the existing fares.
Agboado cited the example of the Lapaz-Tema Station route, noting that fares had been adjusted downward when fuel prices fell. However, the latest increase in fuel prices has placed additional pressure on drivers, necessitating a fare hike. He highlighted that when fuel was GHS16.39, fares from Lapaz to Tema Station were GHS18. The price later reduced to GHS14.99, and fares were adjusted to GHS16. Now, with fuel at GHS17, the situation has become untenable for drivers.
Appealing to passengers, Agboado urged them to understand the drivers' position, emphasizing that fuel costs directly affect their ability to operate and maintain their vehicles. He assured that the proposed increase should not be seen as an unapproved fare but a necessary adjustment in response to rising fuel costs.
