Sunyani: Taxi drivers at the Sunyani main lorry station have given authorities of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly a one-month ultimatum to reshape the deplorable condition of the station or face their anger.
According to Ghana News Agency, the drivers warned that if the assembly failed to address the issues within the set timeframe, they would cease paying fees. The ultimatum was articulated in a joint statement from the Baakoniaba, Abesim, Odumase, Fiapre, Dumasua, Dr Berko, and Nsoatre Taxi Drivers Associations, highlighting their dissatisfaction with the station's condition.
The statement emphasized that the Sunyani main station is a crucial transport hub for the municipality, serving as an entry point for thousands daily. It urged city authorities to ensure the station reflects the status of a regional capital, lamenting the lack of sanitary facilities and the accumulation of refuse.
The drivers expressed concern over the health risks posed by the poor conditions, which have led to an environment conducive to disease-carrying organisms. The statement also noted the station's infrastructural issues, such as numerous potholes and stagnant water, exacerbating public health risks.
Despite these challenges, the drivers continue to pay levies and tolls, pointing out the significant revenue generated from the station's operations. They called for accountability and investment in sanitation, infrastructure, and maintenance, questioning why substantial revenue has not led to improvements.
The statement concluded by demanding the Municipal Assembly transfer station management to the drivers and stakeholders, seeking greater control and improvement of conditions.
