Climate Change Drives Health Crisis in Northern Ghana with Rising Cases of Meningitis

Northern ghana: Climate change has emerged as a pressing environmental issue, significantly impacting countries worldwide, including Northern Ghana. The region has experienced numerous extreme weather events linked to climate change, such as wildfires, droughts, flooding, storms, and heatwaves. These events have contributed to a rise in insect-borne diseases across the area.

According to Ghana Web, the effects of climate change on human health and healthcare systems are broad, affecting various human organ systems and disrupting the operations of health services. In tropical countries like Ghana, conditions such as heatwaves and dry weather have been linked to infectious disease outbreaks, notably Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM). This airborne bacterial infection, caused by Neisseria meningitides, affects the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord, leading to severe health complications and sometimes death.

CSM has been identified as a climate-sensitive disease, with a history dating back to the 1900s in Ghana. The disease has been a recurring public health concern, with significant outbreaks recorded every 8-12 years. The most severe epidemic occurred in 1996/1997, with 18,703 cases and 1,356 deaths, predominantly in the Northern Regions.

Between 2015 and 2019, Northern Ghana recorded 2,446 suspected bacterial meningitis cases, with 842 confirmed. Males and children below 14 years constituted a significant portion of these cases. The Upper West Region has consistently reported high cases of CSM, with fluctuations in numbers and fatalities from 2017 to 2021. Despite a concurrent focus on COVID-19, CSM remains a significant health concern, with higher case and death rates compared to COVID-19 in the region.

CSM's persistence in Northern Ghana is attributed to climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors exacerbated by global climate change. Poor ventilation, overcrowding, malnutrition, and limited access to health services are risk factors for CSM spread, particularly in warm climates.

To combat this health crisis, it is crucial for policymakers to implement preventive measures. Public health education, improved building ventilation, and mass vaccination campaigns are recommended strategies. Additionally, addressing broader climate change issues through afforestation, waste management, and sustainable transportation can help reduce the incidence of CSM.
