Accra: Former Black Stars head coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has expressed his openness to encouraging his sons to play for Ghana at the senior international level if the opportunity arises. Akonnor, a former Ghana international himself, is willing to support any chance for his sons to don the Black Stars jersey, despite the potential challenges.
According to Ghana Web, Akonnor's elder son, Charles Jesaja Herrmann, recently joined German lower-tier club FC Bocholt. Meanwhile, his younger son, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, has made a move to Belgian Pro League side Cercle Brugge, marking a significant step in his burgeoning football career. Akonnor described the younger Herrmann's transfer as crucial in his development within European football.
Akonnor acknowledged that convincing his sons, who were raised in Germany, to switch nationality and play for Ghana might be difficult. "It's difficult to convince them to come to Ghana because they grew up in Germany, but of course, if the need be or if the opportunity arises, we will be able to make that decision," he stated.
His comments come amid Ghana's ongoing efforts to engage dual-nationality players across Europe, aiming to bolster the Black Stars squad for upcoming international competitions.
