Accra: The Children's Heart Foundation Ghana has successfully funded lifesaving open-heart surgeries for two children grappling with congenital heart disorders. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the Foundation's ongoing efforts to provide essential medical interventions for vulnerable children.
According to Ghana News Agency, these critical procedures are set to take place at the Cardiothoracic Centre of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The surgeries represent a beacon of hope for the children and their families, offering them a renewed chance at life. This achievement was made possible through the collective generosity and support of various stakeholders.
The Foundation revealed that Madam Berenice Owen-Jones, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, played a pivotal role in mobilizing funds. Drawing from her personal experience as a mother of a child who once required heart surgery, she spearheaded fundraising efforts through the Melbourne Cup charity event. This initiative was further bolstered by the Foundation's Health Walk, which saw the participation of over 100 students and staff from Tema International School, SOS Hermann Gmeiner College, and Al-Rayan International School. Their involvement significantly contributed to the fundraising initiative, thereby supporting the Foundation's mission to raise awareness and resources for children with congenital heart disorders.
The Foundation reported that one child has already undergone a successful surgery and is currently recuperating, while the second surgery is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. Over its 15-year history, The Children's Heart Foundation Ghana has facilitated lifesaving surgeries for more than 250 children. Despite these successes, the Foundation continues to face the challenge of over 50 children still awaiting surgery.
The Foundation calls upon the community with the message, "Have a heart, save a life," underscoring the collective effort required to make a difference in the lives of these children.
