Accra: Some Chiefs in the Bono Region have called on the government to establish a cashew board to address price fluctuations affecting farmers and to restore confidence in the sector.
According to Ghana News Agency, the chiefs expressed their concerns during the 'Thank You' tour of Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). They emphasized the need for a dedicated board to tackle critical challenges hindering the growth of the cashew sector.
Nana Seidu Sule Zingo II, Chief of Namasa in the Tain constituency, urged the government to institute a cashew board to regulate and stabilize pricing, as well as provide additional benefits for cashew farmers. He pointed out that the absence of such a board has led to constant price fluctuations, causing repeated losses for farmers.
Nana Nketiah Bosopremre Kankamadu III, Chief of Miramano in the Jaman South constituency, highlighted that unstable cashew prices were negatively affecting farmers. He explained that since cashew serves as the main cash crop for farmers in the area, stabilizing prices is crucial for their livelihoods.
Nana Tutu Baffour II, Chief of Jinijini in the Berekum West constituency, underscored the urgent need to address pricing challenges to drive the sector towards greater socio-economic gains.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah reassured the chiefs that plans were underway to stabilize cashew prices and ensure farmers receive fair value for their efforts. He noted that the government was hopeful of fulfilling its promises within four years and remained committed to delivering results for Ghanaians, despite existing challenges.
