Cedi Ends Third Week of January Trading at GHS10.87 to $1

Accra: The Ghana cedi concluded the third week of January 2026, trading at GHS10.87 to the US dollar on the Bank of Ghana's interbank foreign exchange market. This marked the end of a week where the cedi showed stability against the dollar.

According to Ghana Web, data released by the central bank on Friday, January 23, 2026, showed the dollar buying at GHS10.86 and selling at GHS10.87. Other major currencies also recorded slight movements, with the euro quoted at GHS12.75 for buying and GHS12.76 for selling, while the pound sterling traded at GHS14.65 for buying and GHS14.67 for selling.

At forex bureaus, the rates were notably higher. The dollar was bought at GHS11.75 and sold at GHS12.10, indicating a much wider margin compared to the narrower spread offered by the Bank of Ghana. The euro traded between GHS13.40 and GHS14.30, while the pound ranged from GHS15.40 to GHS16.30.

These elevated bureau rates reflect strong demand for foreign currency and limited supply, a common trend at the start of a new financial year. GHS186 million in legal tender is at risk amidst these conditions. In response, the Bank of Ghana is expected to continue its interventions in the coming months to reduce volatility in the market. Investors and traders will be closely monitoring upcoming monetary policy decisions and external inflows, which could impact the cedi's performance.
