Sunyani: The Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese, has called on health professionals to embody compassion, respect, and empathy in their practice. He emphasized the importance of developing a personal connection with the Jesus healing ministry, which exemplifies these qualities, and urged professionals to empathize with their patients by understanding their pain.
According to Ghana News Agency, Bishop Gyamfi shared this advice during the 12th matriculation ceremony of the St Mary campus of the Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Drobo, located in the Jaman South Municipality of the Bono Region. The ceremony, themed 'Called to Serve: Forming Compassionate and Ethical Nurses and Midwives in Faith Practice,' welcomed 144 new students enrolled in the Registered General Nursing and Regulated Midwifery programs for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Bishop Gyamfi, who also serves as President of the Ghana Catholic Bishop Conference, emphasized the need for health workers to prioritize their clients' needs and adhere to ethical standards and moral integrity, key components in effective healthcare delivery. He encouraged valuing life and adhering to the principles of the health profession, which align with the 'Jesus' healing' approach.
He also advised students to aim for academic excellence and specialization, highlighting the need for specialization due to complexities in healthcare. He encouraged them to engage in continuous learning, understand procedures, and apply ethical principles. Additionally, Bishop Gyamfi stressed the importance of networking and building relationships, noting that collaboration among health professionals is essential for future success.
Miss Monica Nkrumah, the Principal of the College, urged students to be disciplined and diligent, taking full advantage of the college's academic and welfare facilities. She noted that the selection process was competitive, with 243 applications received for the academic year. The college's commitment to academic excellence is evident through staff participation in professional development workshops to meet national standards.
