Accra: A suspected armed robber has died following a taxi hijacking incident near the La Girls' School area in Accra on June 13, 2026. The suspect, known only as "Mugu" by local residents, allegedly attacked a taxi driver and fled with the vehicle after firing a gunshot.
According to Ghana Web, a post shared on social media by King Hezekiah on June 14, 2026, detailed the suspect's alleged actions. "Mugu" reportedly confronted the driver of a Daewoo Matiz taxi, with registration number GS 8598-17, before opening fire and seizing the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the sound of gunfire alerted passers-by and nearby residents. However, many kept their distance, fearing for their safety upon realizing that the suspect was armed. One witness mentioned that the suspect quickly sped off after the attack, leaving the scene in chaos as residents and motorists scrambled for safety.
The suspect's escape was short-lived, as the stolen taxi reportedly crashed near the La Girls' School area under unclear circumstances. Witnesses stated that the suspect was subsequently found with a fatal gunshot wound. It remains uncertain whether the injury occurred before, during, or after the crash. The suspect was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
Police personnel who arrived at the scene transferred the body to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination as investigations continue.
