Accra: Ghanaian economist and brother of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills, Cadman Atta Mills, has expressed his disapproval of the recent airport reception for President John Dramani Mahama. This reaction came after a video surfaced showing ministers and government officials gathering at the airport to welcome Mahama following his successful advocacy for a historic resolution on reparative justice at the UN General Assembly.
According to Ghana Web, the video, shared on X on Sunday, March 29, 2026, featured notable figures such as Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine; and Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication. These officials, along with others from the Jubilee House, were seen seated and holding Ghana flags as they anticipated Mahama's arrival.
Cadman Atta Mills questioned the necessity of such receptions, drawing a parallel with the practices during his late brother's administration. He remarked that former President Mills was not a proponent of these displays, opting instead for farewells from either his vice president or Chief of Staff. In a comment accompanying the video, he critiqued the tradition of these public appearances, asking rhetorically, "But who is manning the shop?"
Further elaborating, Atta Mills recalled questioning his brother about similar practices during his presidency, which he deemed unnecessary. He recounted telling his brother that it was "insane" to permit such receptions. However, he acknowledged that in his brother's case, the welcome was associated with a particular occasion.
