Accra: After the Government of Ghana airlifted 300 Ghanaians from South Africa to Ghana on May 27, 2026, there are growing calls for a boycott of South African products and services in Ghana. Ghanaians, especially through social media, are calling on the government not to give audience to any multinational from South Africa in protest of what they are doing to fellow Africans in their country.
According to Ghana Web, a leading voice in these calls has been Kofi Bentil, Vice President for policy think tank IMANI Africa. Bentil has urged the government not to extend the lease of the South African company, Goldfields. In a strong advocacy being pushed on social media, he has encouraged the people of Ghana to oppose renewing the lease of Goldfields in Tarkwa.
Bentil's position has found support among some leading public figures, including Eric Adjei, Chief Executive Officer for the NEIP. Adjei believes it is about time the Ghanaian government considers local content, mirroring the actions called for by South Africans.
Stephen Zoure, Managing Editor for mynewsgh.com, also added his voice to the ongoing advocacy against South Africa. His post rallied the people to boycott products from South Africa in protest of their treatment of other African nationals.
Political activist Kofi Osei has indicated that he will back any demonstration or advocacy against South Africans in Ghana, further amplifying the call for a nationwide boycott.
