BoG, SEC Launch National Virtual Asset Literacy Initiative in Accra

Accra: The Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has launched the National Virtual Asset Literacy Initiative (NaVALI) in Accra. NaVALI represents a significant program aimed at establishing a responsible and strategic approach to regulating and utilizing virtual assets in Ghana.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, highlighted the importance of public collaboration and education on the responsible use and adoption of virtual assets during the initiative's launch. The event emphasized the theme: 'Understand Before You Undertake,' underscoring the necessity for comprehensive public education and consumer protection.

Dr. Asiama addressed the need for a prepared ecosystem through a thorough understanding of virtual asset activities, their implications, and associated risks. He emphasized that NaVALI is designed to meet this need by promoting public awareness, ensuring consumer protection, and achieving regulatory preparedness.

The recent passage of the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act marks a significant step in Ghana's financial sector development. The Bank and the Commission are focused on establishing necessary structures, systems, and processes to operationalize the Act effectively and address existing regulatory gaps and risks.

NaVALI is built on the principle of understanding before undertaking, positioning virtual asset literacy as crucial for a secure digital economy. The initiative is a collaborative effort led by the Bank, the Commission, and key partners from academia and industry to enhance institutional capacity on virtual assets and enabling technologies like blockchain.

The Governor praised the collaborative efforts of the Virtual Asset Regulatory Office, its partner institutions, and all stakeholders involved in developing the initiative. He stressed the need for ongoing cooperation among regulators, industry players, educators, civil society, and the media to implement NaVALI successfully.

Dr. Asiama urged the public to engage actively with the initiative by participating, learning, and asking questions to ensure that financial innovation contributes to national development through knowledge, trust, and accountability.
