Tamale: Concerns are mounting in Tamale following reports that the special forces unit, popularly known as Black Maria, may be withdrawn from the area.
According to Ghana Web, in a passionate appeal circulating on social media, a youth advocate warned that the departure of the forces could plunge the community back into insecurity. She stressed that the presence of the unit has brought peace of mind and stability, noting that markets are already empty as residents fear for their safety.
The advocate highlighted how the forces have enforced law and order, citing compulsory helmet use at traffic lights as one example. She, however, cautioned that without them, lawlessness would return.
The youth further lamented the ongoing challenges of drug abuse in the community, stressing that despite advocacy workshops and seminars, children continue to be affected. She warned that without the forces, the situation could worsen.
'We must all stand in solidarity together because the youth of Tamale are tired. Are you going to wait for your own niece or nephew to be affected before you act?' she asked.
