Accra: Black Bombers head coach Ofori Asare has dismissed claims that Ghana sent injured boxers to the Commonwealth Games, insisting none of the athletes travelled to the competition carrying injuries. Speaking in an interview on Sporty TV, Asare rejected suggestions that some members of the team went into the tournament unfit, stating that the allegations were untrue.
According to Ghana Web, Asare clarified his role in the team selection, noting that he had no involvement in choosing the squad. He explained that he only joined the team after the federation had already chosen the boxers for camp. "I was just given the team, and I didn't play a role in selecting the boxers. I only came in to train them after they had been selected," he said.
When asked why he was excluded from the selection process despite being the team's head coach, Asare admitted he could not explain the federation's decision. He suggested that the selection was likely based on performances at the national championship, where winners and runners-up earned places in the squad.
Asare also addressed reports about his coaching credentials, asserting that while he is not the only internationally certified boxing coach in Ghana, he currently holds the highest coaching qualification among his peers. Despite Ghana's disappointing campaign, the experienced trainer expressed confidence that some of the boxers had the potential to secure medals based on their performances in training before the Games. "They were performing very well, so I believed some of them were capable of winning medals," he added.
