Jasikan: Monsignor Simon Kofi Appiah, Bishop-elect for the Catholic Diocese of Jasikan, will be ordained on Saturday, April 11 at the St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Cathedral in Jasikan, Oti Region. The ordination is expected to attract high-profile dignitaries and members of the Catholic faithful from across the country, marking a major milestone in the spiritual leadership of the diocese.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Johnson Tsyawo, the Chairman of the Bishop-elect Ordination Planning Committee, stated that the bishop-elect will arrive in Jasikan on Friday, April 10, 2026, and will pay courtesy calls on traditional authorities in the area. This visit will be followed by a ceremonial welcome by the Catholic faithful at the Jasikan Main Roundabout, after which a procession will move through the principal streets of the town to the St. Peter Claver R.C. Cathedral.
Mr Tsyawo disclosed in an interview that the main ordination ceremony will take place on Saturday, with several dignitaries expected to be in attendance, including the President of Ghana, Mr John Dramani Mahama, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Rev Julien Kabore, and all Catholic Bishops in the country, among others. He added that activities will climax with a Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday, April 12, at the Cathedral.
Mr Tsyawo called on Ghanaians, particularly members of the Catholic Church, to participate fully in the three-day programme to support the bishop-elect and the diocese. The ordination of Monsignor Appiah is anticipated to usher in a new phase of pastoral leadership and development within the Jasikan Diocese.
Reverend Msgr Appiah, born July 1, 1964, is a Ghanaian Catholic priest, academic, and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Values of the University of Cape Coast (UCC). He was appointed bishop-elect of the Catholic Diocese of Jasikan in December 2025. On December 23, 2025, Pope Leo XIV appointed him as the second Bishop of the Diocese, succeeding Bishop Gabriel Akwasi Ababio Mante, the first Bishop of Jasikan.
Rev Msgr Appiah hails from Teteman, a farming community in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region of Ghana. His appointment has been noted for his extensive academic credentials and rich pastoral experience. The Catholic Diocese of Jasikan in Ghana was created on December 19, 1994, by Pope John Paul II, by carving it out of the then Diocese of Keta-Ho. The Diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Accra, with its seat located in Jasikan in the Oti Region.
