Accra: Residents of Awutu Bereku in the Awutu-Senya District have undertaken a massive clean-up exercise in the township ahead of this year's annual Awubia Festival. The initiative was a collaborative effort by the Awutu-Senya District Assembly, the Awutu Traditional Council, and Zoomlion Ghana, with the aim of eliminating filth from the district capital.
According to Ghana News Agency, this clean-up campaign is part of a broader nationwide sanitation initiative prompted by President John Dramani Mahama's call for citizens to maintain clean environments. The initiative seeks to reduce mosquito breeding and curb communicable diseases. The clean-up was spearheaded by Mr. Eghan Kalala Nyamekye, District Chief Executive, and Mr. Samuel Antwi-Boasiako, District Coordinating Director, with active participation from local residents.
The clean-up exercise involved cleaning the local market, durbar grounds, traditional council area, schools, and town roads. Participants also took part in desilting gutters and clearing refuse from various parts of the township, significantly improving the cleanliness of the area.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, some participants expressed a desire for the District Assembly to extend the clean-up campaign to other communities within the district. They also advocated for stricter enforcement of sanitation by-laws, including the apprehension and prosecution of offenders, to serve as a deterrent to others. Additionally, participants called for the regular organization of such exercises to support the Assembly's ongoing efforts to maintain a clean environment.
