Accra: The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter has called for stronger action to ensure that the rights of women and girls are protected and promoted across the country.
According to Ghana News Agency, the call was made in a statement signed by Dr. Charity Binka, Chairperson of AWLN Ghana, during the celebration of International Women's Day, 2026. The event was themed 'Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,' highlighting both a moment of reflection and action. Dr. Binka noted that although progress has been made in promoting gender equality, many women and girls still face barriers denying them their fundamental rights.
Dr. Binka emphasized that rights must be protected, justice must be accessible, and action must be deliberate and sustained to build a society where every woman and girl can thrive. Ghana has made significant strides toward gender equality with the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, which is considered a historic milestone in promoting women's representation in leadership and decision-making.
However, Dr. Binka observed that legislation alone is not sufficient to guarantee meaningful changes. Effective implementation, public awareness, and institutional accountability are essential to ensure that these rights translate into real opportunities for women and girls across the country. She urged stakeholders to strengthen access to justice for women and girls, including protection against gender-based violence and discrimination.
AWLN Ghana believes that increased investment in girls' education, digital inclusion, and economic empowerment is critical to enable women to contribute fully to national development. The organization calls for collective action from the government, civil society, traditional authorities, the private sector, and the media to challenge harmful social norms and promote gender equality. It served as a reminder of the moment that demands rights, justice, and action.
