Accra: Former Black Stars player Augustine Ahinful has blamed the managers of the national team for the recent controversies surrounding captaincy issues.
According to Ghana Web, Ahinful shared insights from his playing days, noting that players used to unanimously decide the captain, ensuring peaceful transitions and a harmonious atmosphere in the camp. He recounted an instance from 1998 when the players, rather than the then-coach Dossena, chose CK Akonnor as their captain, highlighting the unity and coherence in decision-making during that period.
Ahinful pointed out that the current situation differs significantly, with recent captaincy transitions appearing to be poorly managed by team officials. He stressed the need for addressing this issue, citing confusion involving players like Dede Ayew, Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew, and Kudus Mohammed. He questioned the sudden changes, such as Kudus being made captain and then later Jordan Ayew, suggesting that these decisions create an impression of internal problems within the team.
The former Borussia Dortmund forward remarked on past controversies when Kwasi Appiah named Dede Ayew as captain and Asamoah Gyan as general captain. Ahinful expressed his inability to understand the root of these issues, acknowledging that personal dynamics exist within any team. He likened it to familial settings where preferences naturally occur, without implying dislike for others.
