Attorney General and OSP Receive Equal Budget Allocation, Yield Different Results: Dafeamekpor

Accra: The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has expressed concerns over the disparity in outcomes between the Attorney-General's Department and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), despite both receiving equivalent budget allocations. In an interview on Adom TV's Badwam, Dafeamekpor noted that the 2026 budget allocated approximately GHS250 million to each entity.

According to Ghana Web, Dafeamekpor highlighted that the Attorney-General's Department is currently prosecuting over 10,000 cases, while the OSP is handling only seven cases with a similar budget. He questioned the value for money, given the significant difference in the number of cases managed by each institution.

Dafeamekpor revealed that he and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga had planned to introduce a private member's bill in Parliament to abolish the OSP due to its perceived underperformance. However, President John Dramani Mahama intervened, halting their efforts.

Despite the OSP's mandate to independently investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences, Dafeamekpor argued that the office has not achieved the expected results. He suggested reallocating resources from the OSP to strengthen the Attorney-General's Department and other investigative bodies for improved efficiency.

Although he acknowledged the competence of the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, Dafeamekpor questioned the office's inability to secure court victories. He emphasized the need to evaluate the overall impact of the OSP in combating corruption.
