Accra: The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has emphasized the importance of changing public attitudes towards sanitation as a crucial step in addressing the persistent flooding issue in Accra. He highlighted that while government efforts are essential, they will not suffice without behavioral changes from residents.
According to Ghana Web, Boamah made these remarks in a Facebook post on June 12, 2026, addressing the long-standing challenge of flooding in the city. He stressed the need for a mix of infrastructure investment and public cooperation to effectively tackle the problem. Boamah pointed out that the issue of flooding in Accra necessitates serious investment, strategic planning, and public discipline.
Boamah further noted that poor waste disposal practices have been a significant impediment to improving the city's drainage systems. He explained that many drains remain uncovered and are too small to handle heavy rains, exacerbated by indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which worsens the situation.
Acknowledging the investments made by successive governments in drainage projects, Boamah reiterated that residents also need to contribute to keeping the city clean. He argued that while governments have constructed drainage systems, the solution to flooding cannot rely solely on governmental actions. Attitudinal change, he insisted, is vital for achieving a lasting solution.
Boamah's comments come amid growing concerns over flooding and urban planning in Accra, where heavy rainfall often leads to submerged roads, property destruction, and business disruptions. Experts continue to highlight inadequate drainage infrastructure, rapid urbanization, and poor waste management as major contributors to the flooding issues faced by the capital.
