Accra: The Association of Women in the Media (ASWIM) has urged stakeholders to invest in women through mentorship, resources, and opportunities to accelerate national development.
According to Ghana News Agency, in a statement signed by Mrs. Mavis Kitcher, President of ASWIM, to commemorate International Women's Day 2026, she noted that this year's campaign theme, 'Give to Gain' highlighted the importance of supporting women as a strategic investment for the growth of society.
The 'Give to Gain' mindset emphasizes that when resources, visibility, or mentorship are provided generously, the opportunities for women increase, and when women thrive, the nation benefits. ASWIM highlighted the critical roles women play in national development, ranging from trading in local markets to holding leadership positions in sectors such as technology, law, and governance.
The statement also paid tribute to women in the media, acknowledging their sacrifices in ensuring the public remains informed. 'Within our fraternity, ASWIM pays a special tribute to the women in media who daily sacrifice their comfort and safety to be the conscience of the nation,' the statement said.
Many women journalists navigate demanding newsroom environments while also managing unpaid care responsibilities, yet remain committed to reporting the truth and strengthening democratic accountability. The statement acknowledged the country's progress in advancing gender equity, particularly the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024, which was described as an important step toward inclusive leadership.
ASWIM called for accelerated implementation of gender-sensitive policies, the elimination of the gender pay gap in the private sector, and increased investment in girls' education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as media leadership. While acknowledging that giving women the platform to lead is Ghana's most strategic investment, ASWIM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating policies and initiatives to promote women's leadership and participation in national development.
