Accra: The Association of China-Ghana Mining LBG is partnering with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, for multidisciplinary industrial training. The collaboration also aims to ensure the promotion of scholarship towards the training and human resource development of both parties.
According to Ghana News Agency, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Association of China-Ghana Mining LBG (ACGM) and UMaT in Accra over the weekend, establishing formal links to further promote Sino-Ghanaian relations in the extractive sector. The move is part of efforts to enhance development through knowledge sharing and technology transfer, while bridging the academia-industry gap.
The agreement is designed to last for an initial period of four years and outlines a vision for joint collaborative research for the mutual benefits of both parties. It serves as a broad framework for collaboration in designing short courses and practical training programs for the staff of ACGM to upgrade manpower requirements in its mining business.
Dr. Jamel Seidu, Head of the Geological and Environmental Engineering Department at UMaT, affirmed the University's commitment to implementing the terms of the agreement in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the signing ceremony. He stated that the University would assist in identifying and recommending students for internships and scholarships with the ACGM.
Dr. Seidu praised the ACGM for agreeing to provide its facilities to UMaT students and graduate trainees/interns for training based on requirements set by the miners. The Association includes leading Chinese mining enterprises operating in Ghana, such as Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd, a subsidiary of Shandong Gold Group, and Golden Star (Wassa) Ltd, a subsidiary of Chifeng Gold Group.
On the sidelines of the event, the Association held a stakeholders' meeting, offering various mining firms a platform to showcase their development programs. Mr. Vincent Sun, the Vice President of Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd, was among the attendees.
